The
History of Valentine's Day
A
legend says that Valentine was a priest lived in Rome during the year 270 A.D.
The
Roman Emperor Claudius II, at that time, ordered the Roman soldiers not to marry
because he believed that single men without wives made better soldiers.
Valentine
realized the injustice of the decree and secretly joined them in the sacrament
of matrimony.
When
Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius imprisoned him and put him to
death.
While
Valentine was in prison, he fell in love with a young woman.
On
the eve of his execution, he wrote her a letter signing it "From your
Valentine", an expression that lived ever after.
On
February 14, 270, Valentine was beheaded.
